Early Enrichment Center (EEC)

Early Enrichment Center at Idlewild to open in January 2019

Early Enrichment Center (EEC) at Idlewild is scheduled to open Monday, January 7, 2019. EEC at Idlewild is being developed by the Children and Family Enrichment (CAFE) Center. For information visit or call the CAFE office at 901-746-9341.

"What matters most in a child's development, they say, is not how much information we can stuff into her brain in the first few years.  What matters, instead, is whether we are able to help her develop a very different set of qualities, a list that includes persistence, self-control, curiosity, conscientiousness, grit and self-confidence. Economists refer to these as non-cognitive skills, psychologists call them personality traits, and the rest of us sometimes think of them as character."(Paul Tough, How Children Succeed)The center will be for children ages 6 weeks to 4 years and will be housed in what will be a newly renovated preschool space at Idlewild Church. This center will work with children, parents, and teachers to provide excellent care and learning for all children. The socially/emotionally-based curriculum will focus on building resilience from the earliest ages. Since studies show that 80% of children's brains are developed by the time they are 3 years old, EEC is dedicated to loving and consistent care for your children.

Giving Tuesday for EEC is November 27

Friends and Family,

Idlewild's Outreach Leadership Team encourages you to prayerfully consider the following invitation from the Children and Family Enrichment Center. The OLT believes it presents a unique giving opportunity for members and friends of IPC who are looking for tangible ways to support CAFE, and the Early Enrichment Center at Idlewild in particular.

As many of you know, we are in the final countdown to open the Early Enrichment Center! We are ecstatic to be building a strong team of teachers and staff and cannot wait to bring in all of our new families.

In a few weeks, after the hustle and bustle of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, GIVING TUESDAY provides the opportunity to give back to your community. Giving Tuesday is a worldwide event promoting the idea that the holiday season is not about getting but instead about giving. Christmas is a time for gratitude and generosity rather than lists of things to do, bake, or buy.

On Giving Tuesday, November 27, the Children And Family Enrichment (CAFE) center seeks to raise $5,000 for an outside learning/play space for the Early Enrichment Center (EEC) at Idlewild and for the children of Idlewild Church! Young children learn better through play than anything else! As the countdown begins to open the new EEC, your help is needed to build a fun outdoor play space for children.

Did you know…

  • A swing set costs $1,600
  • An infant bucket swing costs $100
  • A belt swing costs $32
  • Slides cost between $8,000 and $18,000
  • Climbers cost $3,000 and up
  • An outdoor picnic table costs $850
  • A play structure costs $10,000 and up
  • Bongo drums cost $800

While many of the play space items are expensive, even $5 gifts will add up to make a big difference!

We welcome Jeanne Wilson, Consulting Director for EEC

The CAFE Board is pleased to announce that Dr. Jeanne Wilson is the new Consulting Director for the Early Enrichment Center at Idlewild, scheduled to open January 2019. Dr. Wilson is an Assistant Professor of Education (adjunct) at Rhodes College and has recently retired from the position as Head of Early Childhood at St. Mary’s Episcopal School.

Resources & tools for lifelong resilience

CAFE is devoted to providing tools for lifelong resilience. One way to do this is to be aware of current studies and theories of healthy growth. Each week this summer, we offer a link for you to watch or read so we can be a church that keeps our baptismal vows by learning how to help our children become flexible, self-regulated, able to bounce back, faithful, and confident. Here are resources offered for summer 2018.
