Thu April 18 - Maundy Thursday 

The Maundy Thursday Communion Service is at 7:00 p.m. in the sanctuary. Childcare available.

Fri April 19 - Good Friday

The Good Friday Tenebrae is at 7:00 p.m. in the sanctuary. Childcare available.

April 21 - Easter Sunday

Easter services are at 8:30 and 11:00 a.m. Both are in the sanctuary. Holy Week and Easter information

Bring flowers and greenery from your yard next Sunday for the Easter cross! Bring them to the T.K. Young Room by 9:20 a.m. The flowers will be placed on the cross between services. If you have questions, please contact Rebekah Abel Lamar.

 

Thu April 25 - Jones Building Move-In

On Thursday, April 25 come and help with the move back into the Jones Building. Volunteers are needed 9:00 to 12:00 and 4:00 to 6:00. We will be moving furniture, cleaning, and setting up classrooms. There are jobs for everyone. Lunch will be provided. Please call 726-4681 or email Jenni Brooks to let us know you'll be here.

 

Thurs April 25 - Idlewild Book Club

Idlewild Book Club meets the last Thursday of the month at 2:00 in the parlor. On April 25, all are welcome to join the discussion on Finding Dorothy by Elizabeth Letts.

 

Sun April 28 - Children's classes move to Jones Building

Sunday, April 28, children’s Sunday school will move to the first floor of the Jones Building. Look for greeters and signs to help you find your way. Classes will be in these locations:

Two Year Olds: Nursery (1st floor); PK-JK: Room 128; SK‑2nd: Room 127; 3rd‑5th: begins in the Choir Room, then goes to Room 121.

 

Sun April 28 - Gay-Straight Fellowship Potluck

The Idlewild Gay-Straight Fellowship will meet at 12:30 Sunday, April 28 at Thad and Stephanie Rodda’s (699 East Dr.) for a potluck and discussion. Join the Realm Group for more updates or contact Chad Braddock  at 901-907-9757 or chadbraddock@gmail.com. ALL are welcome!

 

Sun April 28 - Young Adult Lunch

Young Adult’s "third Sunday lunch" will be on April 28 (instead of April 21, which is Easter). 

 

Sun April 28 - EEC Scholastic Book Fair

EEC’s Scholastic Book Fair is April 26–30. That Sunday, April 28, the EEC will be open after church so you can stop by and purchase books for yourself or for the school.

 

Wed May 1 - Jones Building Open House

The Jones Building Open House is set for Wednesday, May 1 from 5:30 to 7:30. Everyone is invited! Come and see our “new” facilities, beginning with the welcoming, fully accessible entrance. Yes, there’s an elevator! Throughout the building, people will be available to answer questions and show you around. The first floor includes the the weekday Early Enrichment Center (can be toured after 6:00), which includes children’s Sunday school and activity rooms, as well as the church nursery. On the second floor, see the new lecture hall and kitchen, beautifully refurbished gym, pottery studio, and activity rooms. The third floor houses the youth area, more adult classrooms, and a future resource center. We extend a special invitation to all EEC and recreation parents! There will be light refreshments.

Trezevant residents: For the Open House on May 1, the Trezevant bus will be leaving there at 3:30, then return by 5:00. Please let us know if you want to attend at that time.  

 

Wed May 1 - Jones Scholarship Submission Deadline

Funded by a generous gift from our former senior minister and his wife, the Paul T. and Anna H. Jones Scholarship is awarded annually according to the following guidelines: first priority is given to members of Idlewild Church who are going to Rhodes College or Louisville Seminary; second priority is given to members of Idlewild going to any other higher education institution; third priority is given to non-members of Idlewild going to Rhodes College or Louisville Seminary.

To apply, write a letter describing your accomplishments/honors during your high school or college career, your involvement at church, and plans for the 2019-20 school year. Direct your letter to this address:

Mail or bring the letter to the church office by Wednesday, May 1, 2019. Applicants will be notified as soon as possible as to whether or not they will receive a scholarship.

 

Sat May 4 - Family fellowship for SK-5th 

Fellowship for SK-5th grade families pool party is 11:30–2:00 Saturday, May 4. Hosted by Karen and John Matthews (647 S. McLean 38104). Don’t forget your swimsuit and towel. Please RSVP by April 28.

 

Sun May 5 - Pastor Steve's Retirement Celebration

10:30 a.m. Worship Service — please note that we have only ONE service on May 5! We will not have an 8:30 or 11:00 service.

Everyone is invited to join us as we honor of Pastor Steve Montgomery and celebrate his many years of ministry and service to our church. We begin with worship at 10:30 in the sanctuary, followed by a big potluck and celebration.

 

Sun May 5-19 - Strong Couples Struggle, Too

A couples group entitled “Strong Couples Struggle, Too” will meet Sundays, May 5-19, 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at CAFE. Led by Dr. Steve Haynes. Space is limited. Make reservations with Steve Haynes, haynes@rhodes.edu.

 

Sat May 11 - Fellowship for young families

Fellowship for young families is 5:00–6:30 p.m. Saturday, May 11. Hosted by Kathy and Justin Lohman (16 St. Andrews Fwy. 38111). Please RSVP by May 5.

 

Sun May 19 -  Faith & Advocacy: Connecting Worship and Witness

Idlewild’s participation in the Memphis Interfaith Coalition for Action and Hope (MICAH) invites us to consider the role of advocacy as a faithful response to the Gospel. Please join us Sunday, May 19 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. for an educational forum and worship. As we enjoy a light supper, Dr. Pete Gathje will deliver a presentation on “A Biblical Call to Leitourgia: Public Work.” A worship service will follow in the chapel, with MICAH’s lead organizer, the Rev. Ayanna Johnson Watkins, leading worship. An Offering of Letters will be received to support some of MICAH’s work. (More details to come.)

May 28 - EEC's MAD Summer Camp begins

MAD Summer Camp, a program of the Early Enrichment Center (EEC) at Idlewild, is set for May 28–August 2 from 8:00 to 4:00. This is weekday summer camp for rising K-5th graders, with extended care and limited drop-in care available. In keeping with Idlewild’s longtime focus on outreach, children will Make A Difference (MAD) in Memphis with animals, hunger, clean water, and more. Daily activities include yoga, outdoor play, music, crafts, reading, and water play.

Mon-Fri June 3-8 - VBS and MAD Camp at Idlewild  CANCELLED

CANCELLED -- Vacation Bible School and MAD (Make A Difference) during VBS have been cancelled this summer. They were scheduled for June 3–7. (Note: This is not the MAD summer camp at the EEC.) If you have any questions, please contact Caitlin C. Bomar. Thank you for your understanding!
