January through February - Forgotten Books of the Bible Book Study

During January and February, the congregation is invited to read Robert Williamson’s new book, Forgotten Books of the Bible. Dr. Williamson, a religious studies professor at Hendrix College in Conway AR, will be preaching and teaching at Idlewild on February 24. Prior to his coming, three groups will be studying the book together:

* Stephen Sunday School (begins January 6)

* Young Adult/Christian Parenting Sunday School class (begins January 20)

* Thursday Morning Bible Study (10:00 a.m. Thursdays at Trezevant, beginning January 18)

You can also read the book on your own. Get it from Novel bookstore, online, or from the church ($14). Please contact Brenda Harris to order a book from the church or if you are interested in a group.

 

Feb 22 - Sign up for Cuba Prayer Partner

Prayer partners are needed for the upcoming Cuba mission trip. Prayer partners will write two notes (an introductory letter and one of encouragement), commit to praying daily for your partner, and attend a connecting dinner on April 2. Sign up by February 28 in Realm Events. If you need more info, contact is Anne Apple.

Several teams are already full! Registration is open until February 22. Click here for more info and to register/pay.

  • Mini Strikers: for 4 and 5 year olds as of June 1st, 2018
  • Under 8 division: for 6 and 7 year olds as of June 1st, 2018
  • Under 10 division: for 8 and 9 year olds as of June 1st, 2018
  • Under 13 division: for 10, 11, and 12 year olds as of June 1st, 2018

 

Feb 23 - Fellowship for young families

This month's fellowship for young families is 5:00–6:30 p.m. Elizabeth and Jerry Gilless will host Taco Time (including Korean pork and black bean tacos). More details and SignUpGenius will be in the Children’s Ministry e*blast.

 

Feb 24 - Dr. Robert Williamson Jr., guest speaker

Dr. Robert Williamson Jr., author of The Forgotten Books of the Bible: Recovering the Five Scrolls for Today, will be here Sunday, February 24. He will be preaching that morning, and will give two presentations. Click here for more details.

Feb 24 - Gay-Straight Fellowship

The Idlewild Book Club meets Thursday, Feb. 28 at 2:00 in the parlor to discuss Educated by Tara Westover. All are invited.

 

Thur Feb 28 - Realm Training for Members

Realm training will be held Thursday, Feb. 28 at noon in the T.K. Young Room. Lunch provided. Come and learn new and exciting ways to connect with your church family through Realm. RSVP to Jenni Brooks, jbrooks@idlewildchurch.org. Training will also be offered Feb 12 and 20 at noon.

 

Fri March 1 - Created by God

Created by God Gathering is Friday, March 1, 5:30–8:30 p.m. for 5th and 6th graders and parents. Its purpose is to provide a safe space for conversation around the topic of sexuality in a shame-free environment. Cost is $15 per family for curriculum and pizza. Sat March 2 - Presbytery Meeting at Idlewild

The Presbytery of the Mid-South will meet Saturday, March 2 at Idlewild. In the opening worship at 9:30, Pastor Anne H.K. Apple will preach as she completes her term as Moderator of the Presbytery, moving into Chair of the Administrative Board; and Idlewild elder Mr. Joseph Hoyle will be inducted as Presbytery Moderator.

In the afternoon, following lunch, Pastor Steve Montgomery will be moved to Honorably Retired status. Mr. Larry Bryan, an elder, treasurer and trustee of Idlewild, will share a few remarks as the Chair of the Pastor Nominating Committee which called Pastor Steve to our church. Also, Director of Young Adult Ministry Elizabeth Doolin will preach her ordination sermon. Dress is casual and all are welcome. Come help and see how we are the connectional church!

 

Sun March 3 - Special Sunday School for Parents

March 3: Faith In the Home Sunday School class, led by the Rev. Anne H.K Apple, Jim Apple, and Caitlin C. Bomar, is for anyone interested in strengthening the connection between their walk with God and how that influences the way that they parent. Includes examples of how to cultivate a faith-centered approach to parenting. Meets in the T.K. Young Room.

 

Wed March 6 - Ash Wednesday Service

At 6:30 p.m. on Ash Wednesday there will be a worship service in the Sanctuary. This is a traditional service with imposition of ashes. Nursery care is available. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, the 40 days (Sundays not included) before Easter. 

 

Wed March 13 - YA Bible Study

The Young Adult monthly Bible study has been rescheduled to Wednesday, March 13 (not March 6) due to Ash Wednesday. Location TBA. Contact Elizabeth H. Doolin for info.

 

March 15-17 - Young Men's Retreat

The annual Young Adult Men’s Retreat is set for March 15–17. March 15-17 Young Adult Men’s retreat is March 15-17 at Horseshoe Lake. All young men are invited. Participants will take a look at our priorities in light of the greatest commandments: “…you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ The second is this, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these” (Mark 12:30-31).
